Guiding Young Children in Mathematics

When teaching young children Mathematics, the goal is not simply to help them memorise formulas or obtain the correct answer. It is far more important to develop a strong understanding of numbers and how Mathematics relates to everyday life.

Parents may refer to the Singapore Ministry of Education (MOE) Primary Mathematics syllabus as a guide to understand the learning objectives at each level.

Key Teaching Principles

1. Help Children Understand the Meaning of Numbers (Primary 1 to Primary 4)

Children should learn that numbers represent real quantities, not just symbols written on paper.

Relate numbers to real-life experiences, such as:

By connecting Mathematics to everyday experiences, children develop a much stronger sense of number value and magnitude.

2. Make Fractions Meaningful

Fractions should always be introduced using familiar situations before moving on to calculations.

without relying solely on memorisation.

3. Build Strong Foundation Skills

Parents can also support learning at home by encouraging regular practice through math educational apps games. Many well-designed apps provide engaging exercises for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, allowing children to strengthen their basic arithmetic skills in a fun and interactive way. Short daily practice sessions of just 10–15 minutes can significantly improve speed, accuracy, and confidence.

However, while educational apps are excellent for reinforcing basic computational skills, they should complement—not replace—conceptual learning and problem-solving activities guided by parents or teachers.

 

4. Develop Model Drawing Skills (Primary 3 to Primary 4)

Model drawing is one of the most important problem-solving strategies in the Singapore Mathematics curriculum.

Instead of treating it as another method to memorise, children should first understand why models work.

One effective way is to use LEGO bricks, building blocks, or other physical objects to represent quantities. By arranging and comparing blocks, students can visualise relationships between numbers before drawing bar models on paper.

This hands-on approach helps children recognise that model drawing is a thinking tool, not merely a drawing exercise.

5. Focus on Understanding Rather Than Memorising

When solving word problems, encourage children to understand the meaning of each quantity and the relationships between them.

Instead of immediately searching for a formula, guide them to ask questions such as:

A Strong Foundation Leads to Long-Term Success

Children who develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts in the lower primary years (Primary 1 to Primary 4) are better prepared for upper primary Mathematics. Strong conceptual understanding reduces reliance on memorisation and enables students to solve unfamiliar and higher-order questions with confidence.
